A Commitment to The Whole Mission of The Church

A commitment to the whole mission of the church

Two weeks ago, we began a new message series, Who Are We? We are looking at who COMMUNITY Covenant Church is as part of a larger group of churches called the Evangelical Covenant Church. Because our name sounds unusual to people who are not familiar with Christian churches, when people ask who we are, I usually tell them about what we believe - sharing with them something about each of our 6 Covenant AffirmationsThese are 6 beliefs or values we have which show who we are and what we think is important as to how we function as a denomination and conference, as a church, and hopefully how you and I live our faith in life.

Today we are looking at the 3rd of our Affirmations:  A Commitment to the Whole Mission of the Church.

The Covenant Church has always been characterized by its involvement in mission.  In fact, the earliest name attributed to Covenanters was “Mission Friends” because they were people who “covenanted” together for the purpose of being ‘on mission’ both in the communities where they lived and far away. Their mission then, and our mission today, is a commitment to both evangelism (which is a Greek word meaning “good News”), and ministries of compassion, justice, and mercy.

We have the best news in the world-- The good news about God’s love and forgiveness through JesusAnd God wants us to share that good news with others. Jesus’ mission when he was here on earth was to love and minister to people and tell them the good news of God’s grace and forgiveness. God wants that to be our mission too.

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. [19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20

Acts 1:8 (NLT)

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

The Great Commandment and The Great Compassion - Ministries of compassion, justice, and mercy

Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT)

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40

Matthew 25:31-40 (NIV)

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. [32] All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. [33] He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. [34] "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. [35] For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, [36] I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'  [37] "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? [38] When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? [39] When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' [40] "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25:31-40

Mark 2:1-12 (NIV)

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”  8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Mark 2:1-12 gives us a picture of some people who practice the whole mission of the church…

  1. Their hearts ache for those who do not know Jesus.
  2. They break rules.
  3. They offend Pharisees (legalistic religious people).
  4. They are used by God to change lives.

Taking It Home

We encourage you to take a few minutes today and this week to process this morning’s message.  These questions are designed for discussion with your family, a friend, mentor, spouse, and small group.  They are also useful for self-reflection.

1. What stands out to you in these passages from the Bible? From the message?

2. What is difficult for you to understand or accept in these passages from the Bible?  From the message?

3. What is God saying in these passages and through what we heard in the message about Himself? About people? About you?

4. What examples are there to follow, commands to obey, or promises to stand on from these passages in the Bible, and from what we heard in the message?
