MESSAGE NOTES
Practicing The Way – Follow-up Message
Intercessory Prayer – Part 1
Romans 8:19-27
In our Message Series, Practicing The Way, we learned more about being a Disciple of Jesus, or the way we could describe it in today’s language, being an Apprentice of Jesus. One of the practices of Jesus we learned about was prayer. In that message we talked more about UPWARD prayer which is adoration and worship, and INWARD prayer which is a contemplative type of prayer as we focus on God and our relationship with Him. Today we are talking about OUTWARD prayer.
OUTWARD prayer is what we might call INTERCESSORY PRAYER --- in other words, prayers of intercession for our nation and world, and for people all around us in our schools, places of work, neighborhoods, and our families. It is praying for the sake of others as part of our desire to live For God’s Glory and Neighbor’s Good.
It is praying big faith-filled prayers and persevering in prayer until we see a breakthrough. It is prayers which help advance the Kingdom of God by partnering with God in what God is doing in people’s lives as we intercede on their behalf.
Romans 8:19-27…
God plucks the world out of our hearts loosening the chains of attachment. And then he holds the world into our hearts where we and he together carry it in infinitely tender love. Thomas Kelly
Taking It Home
We encourage you to take a few minutes today and this week to process this morning’s message. These questions are designed for discussion with your family, a friend, mentor, spouse, and small group. They are also useful for self-reflection.
- What stands out to you in these passages from the Bible? From the message?
- What is difficult for you to understand or accept in these passages from the Bible? From the message?
- What is God saying in these passages and through what we heard in the message about Himself? About people? About you?
- What examples are there to follow, commands to obey, or promises to stand on from these passages in the Bible, and from what we heard in the message?
